Hackteria is a community for Open Source Biological Art Projects which has developed a rich wiki-based web resource for people interested in or developing projects that involve bio art, open-source software/hardware, DIY biology, art/science collaborations and electronic experimentation.

The goal of the new Soil Microscopy Workshop and bio-VJ Night series of DIY and open-source scientific instrument workshops was to grow a local community around the new Hackteria ZET – Open Science Lab in Switzerland. The day was a two-part program. In the afternoon, basic microscopy was covered and a range of professional and self-made open source microscopes were demonstrated, including the Hackteria Microscopy Stage

Hackteria re-designed this laser-cut stage and guided the participants through the process of making their own DIY microscope from a hacked webcam. The microscopes were used to image organisms in the lab including Euglena, Daphnia and Spirulina. A field trip to collect samples from soils and local water bodies was cancelled due to adverse weather.
