Part-time, fixed value contract to be delivered Mar-May 2021
Contract amount: $6000 USD

Job Overview

The Gathering for Open Science Hardware (GOSH) community supports open hardware for scientific research and education by convening meetings such as global and regional GOSH events and providing online forums that democratize research, influence policy and take action to make open science hardware (OScH) ubiquitous by 2025, as laid out in the GOSH Roadmap.

As part of achieving the GOSH Roadmap recommendations intended to scale the impact of open science hardware globally, a series of three policy workshops are being organized Mar-May 2021 which will focus on three key audiences: university technology transfer offices, research funders and science policy makers from national, regional and international agencies. These workshops will result in a workshop report and policy brief on each topic.  Additionally, a series of at least two workshops and contributions from multiple community members will document a model for organising open science hardware events based on previous Gatherings for Open Science Hardware.

This role is to shape the visual aspect of the policy briefs and GOSH model documentation, with the support of the GOSH Community Coordinator. The primary deliverables include determining content layout, and creating graphics and illustrations to support this layout.

These workshops are convened by GOSH community members, funded by Alfred P Sloan Foundation and coordinated by Gathering for Open Science Hardware Inc, a US-based nonprofit which will manage the recruitment of this role.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • For each policy brief:
    • Conceptualize visualizations based on content
    • Prepare rough drafts and present ideas to the GOSH community, with the support of the GOSH Community Coordinator.
    • Develop and test illustrations, layouts and graphics
    • Produce final design
  • For the GOSH model documentation
    • Conceptualize visualizes based on content
    • Prepare rough drafts and present ideas to the GOSH community, with the support of the GOSH Community Coordinator.
    • Develop and test illustrations, layouts and graphics
    • Produce final design

Qualifications

  • Experience: involvement in the OScH community is desirable as well as previous graphic design experience
  • Specific skills: Illustration, familiarity with design software, eye for aesthetics and details 
  • Personal characteristics: team player, organised, strong communication skills, strong alignment with the values of the GOSH Manifesto.
  • Certifications: None necessary
