Overview

This 3 day event (Aug 3-5, 2019) will take place at a lakeside cottage ~2 hrs West of Toronto (map). Think of it as a combination hackathon/summer retreat, offering unstructured time with other open science enthusiests to explore hardware applications in a relaxed, outdoor setting, with opportunities for hands-on practical workshops, informal campfire discussions, and time for prototyping new integrations between existing open hardware projects.

Facility

The cottage has 5 queen beds, 2 sets of bunk beds, and lots of space for people to pitch tents. There's a pool, hot tub, canoes, kayaks, etc.

Activities

Specific activities will depend on participants and their interests. If you have a project that you want to work on, make a proposal on the discussion forum. It could be a workshop you want to lead, a collaboration you are searching for, or a call for volunteers.

If nothing comes to mind, you can also volunteer your time/skills to someone else’s project.

Or if you’d rather just relax and hang out and get to know other GOSHers, that’s ok too! This event is all about getting to know each other and building a community.

Examples of the type of projects you might consider:

1. A workshop on building a DIY microscope to identify freshwater organisms from the lake.

2. Testing soil and/or produce from the garden using a open-source photospectrometer/reflectometer.

3. Prototyping automated microfluidics-based methods for water quality testing.

If you want to discuss anything else related to the hackathon/retreat, there's a thread on the forum.
