Open Science Shop was initially conceptualized as part of the Open Hardware Distribution & Documentation Working Group, which started in July 2020 and ended in May 2021. The short-term goal of the working group was to produce a proof of concept for distributed Open Science Hardware (OScH) manufacturing, using the OpenFlexure project as a case study. A report, “Distributed Manufacturing of Open Hardware” was published to motivate and inform others in future discussions and implementation of an expanded distributed manufacturing landscape for OScH.

The Open Science Shop working group then emerged to help implement the recommended support structures for companies to enable sustainable distributed manufacturing of OScH. In 2022 the group received a Collaborative Development Programme grant from the Gathering for Open Science Hardware to further explore the idea.

The Open Science Shop team developed a whitepaper, brainstormed ways to manufacture and sell open science hardware at a one-hour coworking session led by the GOSH Community in Dec 2023 and established a Slack, blog and other routes to engage others thinking about how to increase adoption and sales of open science hardware.
