The Nigerian Society of Engineers Students Branch, the University of Nigeria Nsukka, is a community of young professionals committed to delivering quality technology and skills-based training for students and aspiring engineers.

The “MakerWare Design Programme” is an embedded system design training that is part of our Professional Development Programme, held every semester to teach novices/beginners how to design and implement embedded/electronic systems using open-source tools.

This year training was held from the 22nd – 30th of May 2023 at the Faculty of Engineering – University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The programme had around 200 students in attendance for 3 hours a day, three times a week. Programming focused on making different low-cost devices such as:

  • Arduino UNO kits
  • ESP 32/8266 kits
  • Actuators
  • Sensors
  • Electrical/Electronic components
  • Internet Bundle

Throughout the week, students were able to get hands-on skills in making devices that are useful in their lives. Through embedded systems work, students made temperature controllers, Bluetooth automation devices and a solar tracker. All tools were made with open-sourced principles according to GOSH guidelines. The project team reported that it was an impactful experience and the students are looking forward to the next embedded systems design programme.
