Hackuarium is a community laboratory in Switzerland, which aims to democratize research by mixing together biology and technology for lifelong learning and fun. “Jump-starting community lab open science hardware with Hackuarium: Mitch Altman workshop and OpenFlexure EpiFluor Builds (MAOFE)” aimed to reignite collaboration after pandemic separation of community lab members and to activate both the local and regional biohacker community. The MAOFE event was a week-long program that took place in Renens, Switzerland from June 29, 2022. Hosted by Hackuarium with hacker Mitch Altman, the event was open to all who were interested in learning more about biohacking and ultimately led to the building, development, and testing of the latest OpenFlexure microscope for high-resolution epifluorescence imaging.

Several hackers across Europe came to collaborate together and the EpiFluorescence detection progressed. The parallel OpenFlexure builds and experiments proved challenging due to 3D printer breakdown but work is continuing on these projects at weekly meetups.
