Habeli Outdoors Learning Center is an organization located in Kakani, Nuwakot, Nepal that encourages outdoor education and environmental stewardship.

The “Environmental Science with micro:bit” workshop was intended for science teachers working in schools in Kathmandu, of whom 25-30 were invited from around 15 schools. The goals of the program was to further outdoor science education, and integrate open-source hardware (micro: bit) into classes to learn from nature.

Five teachers participated in the first session and were reported as being fascinated with the microbit. They have expressed interest to keep learning about it and use it in their classes and some also signed up for the OSH forum, which should help the project team to set up a community of Nepali teachers exploring the idea of OSH in education in Kathmandu.

One of the major challenges faced was getting the microbits to Nepal, they were stuck in customs and the logistics partner reported difficulties in explaining to officials what the microbits are. The project team were able to borrow some to run the workshop. Affordability and accessibility were raised by the teachers as issues, so the project team is exploring a lending library for micro:bits and potentially other tools.
