Culture² is a platform which focuses on highlighting research related to community biology, ancestral knowledge, and creative biology while also specifically highlighting the research of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ practitioners of various socioeconomic backgrounds and lived experiences.

Culture² GOSH Regional Event was a three-day hybrid event in Toronto, Canada. The event focused on including various stakeholders in local food systems to document strategies and co-design tools that could be used in the cultivation and processing of crops for culturally specific needs. The event also featured mentorship, site visits, meals, and project development with community leaders.

Participants including food workers in agriculture and service, and people with various skill sets, disciplines, and occupational backgrounds collaborated to ideate the tools needed to build the food systems of their dreams. At the end of the workshop, the participants developed two concepts to have open-source prototypes developed by community technicians:

  • “Manual of Decay” is a publicly available reference guide to different definitions, theories, methodologies, and philosophies of decomposition as they relate to the natural world and our food systems.
  • “Compost Sensor” is a combination of a temperature sensor and low-cost moisture sensor which expresses changes over time (in relation to decay in compost) rather than used as a tool for scientific accuracy.
