I.O.Me Innovation Labs, Kenya’s first humanitarian Fabrication Lab has a community-based space located in Lamu, a rural coastal town in Kenya. They aim to provide access to digital fabrication tools and technological skills necessary to promote problem-solving and innovation within the community, targeting children, the youth and artisans. “Build a ROV DIY’ was a one-day workshop in May 2023 to expose participants to the DIY process of assembling products, as well as the basics of digital fabrication processes. The workshop aimed to demonstrate to participants how they can use locally available materials coupled with open-science hardware to create relevant learning STEM kits and marine-related solutions.

15 physics students from Mokowe Secondary School in Lamu built a DIY ROV Kit. The secondary students were introduced to underwater robot education, fluid buoyancy, Ohm’s law, underwater thrust and waterproofing design among other topics. They picked up skills in basic electronics, plastic welding, control of the ROV and device assembly including soldering electronic components and wires.

I.O.Me Innovation Labs have been building and developing projects, curricula and kits aimed at promoting STEM Education and introducing digital fabrication technologies to learners (including those with special needs). The DIY ROV kit will be used as part of the activities spearheaded by the Red Cross Clubs available in most local schools and IOMe254 labs. A trip is planned to take the ROV for a test in the ocean
